Clean a CSV without losing track of your rows

  1. Open a CSV or paste its contents. Choose comma, semicolon or tab as the separator and confirm whether the first row contains column names.
  2. Read the columns and choose your matching rule. Leave every column checked to remove identical records. Choose just email, SKU or another key when the rest of the row can differ.
  3. Choose which record to keep. Keep first uses the earliest matching row in the file; keep last uses the latest row position. Neither option sorts dates.
  4. Review and download. Inspect the cleaned preview and the removed rows. Download the removed records separately if you want to audit the change.

Example: same email, different order ID

Suppose alex@example.com appears with order IDs 001 and 003. Matching all columns keeps both: the orders differ. Matching only the email column treats the rows as duplicates. Keep first retains order 001; keep last retains order 003, assuming that is their original order.

Choose a key that fits your task. A repeated customer address does not necessarily mean a duplicate order. The tool follows the columns you choose; it does not infer which business records should be removed.

Are spaces, capitalization and leading zeros changed?

By default, matching is exact and case-sensitive. Optional controls can ignore outer whitespace or uppercase/lowercase differences for matching. They do not rewrite the cells in your downloads. Leading zeros, dates and numeric-looking IDs remain text; 001 and 1 remain different values.

Rows keep their original relative order. Headers are preserved when enabled, quoted separators and multiline cells are supported, and empty physical lines outside quoted cells are ignored. Records with different column counts produce an error rather than a guessed repair.

File formats and limits

Open a UTF-8 text file up to 2 MB, or paste up to 1,000,000 characters. Use at most 25,000 data rows and 100 columns. Excel workbooks are not CSV files; export the relevant sheet as CSV UTF-8 first. Downloads use your selected separator, quoted cells and CRLF line endings.

The CSV quoting rules are described in RFC 4180. Quoting preserves cell text; it does not prevent spreadsheet software from interpreting formulas or converting values when a CSV is opened. Import columns as text when that matters.
